TSM-Table

As a member of the Mining Association of Canada (MAC), Hudbay is committed to achieving the performance objectives set out in Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM). This is a codified system establishing benchmarks for best performance and continuous improvement. We report our efforts annually to MAC. The TSM regime has six performance categories, as follows:

  • Crisis communications management – Requires effective protocols to ensure all stakeholders are kept apprised of developments during an emergency.
  • Tailings management – Measures a mining operator’s commitment to locate, design, construct, operate and close tailings facilities so that all structures are stable, solids and water are properly managed and structures comply with industry and government standards.
  • External outreach – Aims to create new channels of communication and forge useful relationships with key individuals and groups outside the industry.
  • Energy use and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) management – requires the operator to have a formal energy management system that reduces intensity by 1% annually and a GHG reduction strategy that decreases GHG output by 1% annually.
  • Biodiversity – Measures commitment to biodiversity conservation.
  • Health & Safety – Measures performance relative to protecting the safety, health and wellness of employees, contractors and visitors.

Hudbay’s reports are externally verified by MAC-trained assessors every three years.

The following table summarizes Hudbay’s scoring on each of the indicators within the TSM protocols. The details of each indicator can be found in the TSM documents on the MAC website.

1HudBay defines all sites managed by the HBMS subsidiary as a single entity for TSM evaluation. All TSM scoring other than as noted for corporate historically includes the Flin Flon and Snow Lake operations, as well as no-longer owned operations Zochem. The numerical scores listed in this table correspond to the scoring against the indicators in each protocol. Please visit the links below for more information on the protocols and indicators. As of 2012 the protocols use a letter grading rather than the numeric grading in this table (4=AA, 3= A, 2=B, 1=C):
