Environment

We aim to improve our environmental performance and minimize the footprint of our operations. This is done in a number of ways, including:

  • Setting continuously improving environmental targets and measuring performance against them
  • Maintaining ISO 14001 environmental management systems certification at all production operations
  • Proactively rehabilitating land after cessation of operations so as to accelerate natural reclamation
  • Supporting community projects to minimize the aesthetic impact of our activities

Our Environment, Health and Safety policy sets the standard by which we operate. Details on environmental programs and performance are available in our annual Corporate Social Responsibility Report and Key Performance Data tables.

Here is a summary of key environmental objectives and activities:

Objective Activities
Climate Change and Energy Use – Maintain our better-than-Kyoto target of reducing total CO2-equivalent emissions by at least 1% per year. From 2009 to 2010, we reduced CO2 emissions by 29% and direct energy consumption by 27% primarily as a result of the closure of the Flin Flon copper smelter.
Water Management – Reduce fresh water usage in Flin Flon operations by 1% per year. As a result of the copper smelter shutdown and water savings initiatives undertaken at the complex, we achieved a 1.6% improvement from 2009 to 2010.
Air Emissions – Committed to measuring, controlling and reducing harmful emissions to air. Our primary emissions are dust and particulates containing heavy metals. The copper smelter shutdown in 2010 substantially reduced these emissions, and rigorous monitoring programs are in place to ensure that particulate levels remain below regulatory limits. We have also performed extensive work to mitigate fugitive tailings dust from the Flin Flon tailings impoundment system.
Waste Management – Reduce, reuse and recycle wherever
we can.
All operations have waste management plans to reduce, reuse, recycle and responsibly dispose of the waste they generate. We adhere to the Mining Association of Canada’s best practices for managing tailings.
Biodiversity – Minimize our environmental footprint at every stage of operation. Before mining begins, we perform comprehensive environmental baseline studies and impact assessments to enable us to integrate sustainability into the mine planning and design processes.
Remediation – Proactively rehabilitate land after cessation of operations so as to accelerate natural reclamation. Having closed many mines in our history, sometimes in ecologically sensitive areas, we have turned mine closure and remediation into core competencies for Hudbay.
